The Audiophiliac chats with the project's mastering engineers to get the inside scoop on the Beatles sound.

"I bought the US Beatles Capitol Albums sets when they were remastered in 2004, and compared those discs with the 2014 remasters. Frankly, there's no comparison; the new ones sound better. They're more fleshed out, less compressed, and clearer."

February 7th, 1964. The Beatles arrive in New York.

Paul: "There were millions of kids at the airport, which nobody had expected. We heard about it in mid-air. There were journalists on the plane, and the pilot had rang ahead and said, 'Tell the boys there's a big crowd waiting for them.' We thought, 'Wow! God, we really have made it.' "

Today marks the 50th anniversary of The Beatles' US debut. On this date in 1964, The Beatles flew together across the Atlantic for the first time, in hopes of cracking the USA - something no British band had yet managed to do. By the time the third and last of their first Beatles Ed Sullivan broadcasts aired - a little more than two weeks after their arrival - the band would be back home, having made broadcasting history and their trip as a whole a phenomenal and unprecedented success.

RINGO:  "It's great to be here.  It's a wonderful to-do with music.  For me, that's my life.  At 13, I was ill, I was in hospital.  They gave me a little, teeny drum, and I only ever wanted to do that for the rest of my life.  And that's what's carrying on today, really, The Beatles' music is still out there and that's the thing I'm most proud of."

Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono accepted the award on behalf of The Beatles.

The Recording Academy honoured the 2014 Special Merit Awards recipients at the Special Merit Awards Ceremony & Nominees Reception on Jan. 25 in Los Angeles. This year's Lifetime Achievement Award recipients are The Beatles, Clifton Chenier, the Isley Brothers, Kraftwerk, Kris Kristofferson, Armando Manzanero, and Maud Powell; Trustees Award honorees are Rick Hall, Jim Marshall and Ennio Morricone; and Emile Berliner and Lexicon are Technical GRAMMY Award recipients.

From the Apple released album "Is This What You Want?":

"Jackie Lomax is a singer of energy and passion. His roots are in R&B and in the best tradition of blue-eyed soul (even if his eyes are green).
